Our Story

How Tunas Bina came to be

Tunas Bina started in 2019 when our founder, Azlan Hashim, noticed something that kept coming up in conversations with small business owners: they often had a clear sense of what was not quite working, but not always the space or the right person to think it through with. Accountants handled the numbers. Lawyers handled the contracts. But the everyday decisions — how to organise their time, how to approach a difficult supplier, how to plan the next six months without overreaching — those tended to fall through the gap.

The name Tunas Bina reflects the spirit behind the work. Tunas means sprout — something young and growing. Bina means to build. Together they describe what we try to do: support the early and middle stages of a business as it takes shape, without rushing the process or imposing someone else's idea of what growth should look like.

We are based in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, and we work with owners across the Klang Valley and beyond — mostly by referral, mostly one at a time. That is how we prefer it. It keeps the work thoughtful.

Mission

To give small business owners access to clear, considered thinking — at the moments when it matters most, and at a pace that works for them.

Vision

A Malaysia where small businesses can draw on the same calibre of thoughtful business support that larger companies take for granted.

Values

Honest assessment. No overselling. Respect for the owner's own knowledge of their business. And a genuine interest in seeing things go well for them over time.

How We Work

Standards we hold ourselves to

These are not policies on paper — they are the things that shape every conversation we have with a client.

Client Confidentiality

Everything discussed in our sessions stays between us. We do not share client information, refer to past clients' details in new engagements, or use what we learn to benefit others.

Honest Assessment

We tell owners what we observe, not what we think they want to hear. This is done with care, but we do not soften observations to the point where they lose their usefulness.

No Upselling

We do not push for longer or larger engagements than the situation calls for. If the Starting Point Conversation is all that is needed, we say so.

Written Follow-Ups

After every session, clients receive a short written note covering what was discussed. It is their record, not ours — they can do whatever they like with it.

Manageable Scope

Suggestions are sized to what a small business owner can realistically act on. Complexity is reduced where possible; everything is explained in plain language.

Reachable Between Sessions

For clients on the Year-Ahead Companion, we remain reachable between quarterly meetings — by email, for questions that come up as the year unfolds.

Our Perspective

Why small business consulting in Malaysia works differently

Running a small business in Malaysia comes with particular textures — the rhythms around public holidays, the relationships that matter more than contracts, the specific pressures of being an SME in a market that moves quickly. Generic consulting frameworks that travel well internationally do not always translate cleanly here.

Tunas Bina draws on direct experience with Malaysian small businesses — in food and beverage, professional services, light manufacturing, and retail. We understand what the books say, and we also know what tends to happen when you try to follow the books too closely in conditions that the books did not account for.

Our practical approach to operational review, business planning, and day-to-day decision support is built on that combination: structured enough to be useful, flexible enough to fit the business as it actually is. We work with owners who care about their business and want someone in their corner who will take it seriously alongside them.

Enquiries are welcome from businesses at any stage — newly established, growing steadily, or navigating a difficult patch. If the timing is not right, we will say so honestly. If it is, we will find a way to be helpful that makes sense for where you are.
